Detroit Revitalization and Business (R&B) Initiative invites you to its 6th annual two-part conference: Bankruptcy to Bankability: A City in Transition. This year's conference is focusing on the many ways we engage with the cities in which we live as both citizens and businesspeople. As Detroit emerges from bankruptcy, we will look beyond the media perception and explore the reality of what has occurred on the ground over the last six years. Detroit community and business leaders will share the highlights of their work, and the conference will provide students with an opportunity to connect with those creating change in the city.

Conference Day: Friday, November 13, 2015

11:00 AM - 11:30 AM: Registration (Ross's Entrance)

11:45 AM - 12:00 PM: Welcome from Detroit R&B Presidents (6th Floor Colloquium)

12:00 PM - 1:15 PM: Lunch Discussion Speakers and Catering from Slows BBQ! 
(6th Floor Colloquium) - Small group discussions with residents and practioners in Detroit regarding their impact on the city. Participants can engage with small business owners, government officials, storytellers, transportation representatives, urban planners, community activists, educators, and entreprenuers.

1:30 PM - 2:45 PM: Detroit Made Panel (Robertson Auditorium) - Detroit-based organizations will share what it means to be "Detroit Made" and what they see as their role in shaping the future of the city. Hear from leaders at Sidewalk Ventures, Shinola, Eastern Market Corporation, and Michigan Funders.

3:00 PM - 4:30 PM: Breakout Sessions (1st Floor Classrooms) - Examination of diverse topics surrounding Detroit designed to spark debate and provide insight.

Managing in a Difficult Political Environment - Facilitated by Anthony Adams, Former Deputy Mayor of Detroit: Will discuss how the Detroit government is playing a vital role in creating positive change and facilitating the economic and social recovery process in the city


Understanding Privilege: Self Awareness in Community Development Work - Facilitated by Lauren Hood, Deep Dive Detroit: Will redefine stereotypes of the Native Detroiter and examine how to engage with the city as an outsider by surpassing the hesitations and barriers of entering a new community
 

Bad Ass Story Telling - Facilitated by Matt Dibble, Final 5: Will explore the art behind expressing yourself through sharing your story and personal brand when joining an unfamiliar community

 

4:30 PM - 5:30 PM: Reception - Connect with and talk to event speakers over dessert!
 
Conference Dinner: Thursday, February 4, 2016

The conference dinner held in downtown Detroit, will be celebrating the successful completion of this year’s Detroit Impact Projects. Drinks, dinner, and transportation will be provided. After dinner, students will have the opportunity to explore some local bars and nightlife in Detroit before heading back to Ann Arbor. More information regarding the keynote speaker and location will come soon!
