EVC Newsletter | October 17, 2016
Hello EVC members! We are sending our best wishes for strength and sanity for those of you taking finals this week. Almost to fall break!
Last week was a great one for EVC. We had our October General Body Meeting on Tuesday (you can review the presentation here). Guest speaker Jason Townsend, of Resonant Venture Partners, gave a highly engaging presentation where he charted the career decisions that have affected his net worth over time:
On Friday, 10 EVC members trekked to Detroit via private bus and spent the day visiting Detroit Venture Partners and Shinola. They met with the CEO of Shinola for about an hour! We are planning another trek in the spring to hit a few more of the Detroit start-up scene highlights that we couldn't fit in this trip. Here are a few photos from the trip (shout out to Scarlett for capturing the day with her selfie stick!):

Ross School of Business - Room TBD
For our next EVC workshop, we are hosting Cognitir, a global web development training company, to teach students how to create state-of-the art websites with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript in a one-day, interactive course. Cognitir has taught this web development course at other top MBA programs including Columbia Business School, Kellogg School of Management, London Business School, and Kenan-Flagler. Whether you are just starting your business or already have a validated business idea, building a professional and dynamic webpage is often the first step in the journey. By the end of this beginner course, participants will have built their very own webpages.
Registration is coming soon (we'll post on Slack when we get it!). The price is $99 and limited to 50 seats. Open to all students but the first 20 EVC members who sign up will receive a $20 discount code. More details about the course specifics can be found here.
The 2nd Annual EVC Week!
Monday 11/14-Friday 11/18
EVC Week is coming! More details will be shared as they are finalized but we wanted to give you a sneak preview of the schedule so you can block your calendars now! Times are subject to change, we will create individual events in CampusGroups soon to keep you updated.
- Monday 11/14 7-8:30pm Incubator + Accelerator Fair: A chance for students to get a better understanding of the incredibly rich entrepreneurship ecosystem in Ann Arbor and surrounding areas. This will be an informal meet and greet to hear more about what's happening and how students can get involved. Similar format to ZLI's Mingle 'n' Match series (short pitches up front, a lot of time for networking after).
- Tuesday 11/15 5-6pm November General Body Meeting: Featuring guest speakers from the local food entrepreneurship scene. Several of our EVC members are working to start companies in the food space so we figured we might as well bring in some people who are trying it out locally.
- Wednesday 11/16 6:30-8:30pm Side Hustle Panel: What do you do when you're an entrepreneur at heart but student loans won't let you be great and take the plunge? This event will be a panel discussion, heavy on audience Q&A, about how aspiring entrepreneurs can hold themselves accountable and avoid common traps when looking to start a business on the side while working full time.
- Thursday 11/17 afternoon Google Hangout with an Intrapreneur: A conversation with an impressive intrapreneur about how to foster your inner entrepreneurial spirit while still working at a large company.
- Friday 11/18 2-3pm InnovateBrew with FocusMotion co-founders: Our third InnovateBrew of the year! This time, we've confirmed the co-founders of FocusMotion, a cross-platform, hardware-agnostic motion recognition system for developers that want to analyze user's movements. FocusMotion recently received an investment by BryantStibel, Kobe Bryant's VC fund. The co-founders, Cavan Canavan and Grant Hughes, are both Ross MBA alums.
- Friday 11/18 4-6pm Closing Happy Hour Come hang out with the EVC board as we celebrate another successful EVC Week (hopefully...).
Zell Lurie Institute Entrepreneurship Workshops
We cannot emphasize enough how powerful ZLI's resources are for students. They are offering valuable workshops almost every day, taught by entrepreneurs who have extensive experience working with students. Check out the upcoming (free!) events here.
ZEAL Entrepreneurship Clinic - free legal advice for student start-ups
Part of Michigan Law’s Zell Entrepreneurship and Law (ZEAL) Program, the Entrepreneurship Clinic is a clinical law program focusing on advising U-M student entrepreneurial ventures. The Center for Entrepreneurship has partnered with ZEAL to host the weekly Entrepreneurship Clinic. The Zell Lurie Institute hosts its office hours on Mondays (3-4 p.m.) and at TechArb on Thursdays (3-4 p.m.). The Entrepreneurship Clinic provides students with unique, real-world experience in representing early-stage ventures while offering valuable legal services to the University entrepreneurial ecosystem. The clinic has provided no-cost legal services to a significant number of student-led startups since its inception in 2012, meets with hundreds of student entrepreneurs each year, and has provided hundreds of hours of legal information to individuals and organizations throughout the U-M community. Click here for more information and to sign-up for the clinic.

“When we remove ego, we’re left with what is real. What replaces ego is humility, yes—but rock-hard humility and confidence. Whereas ego is artificial, this type of confidence can hold weight. Ego is stolen. Confidence is earned.” – Ryan Holiday, Ego is the Enemy
Stay humble!
