NOLS MBA Survey

NOLS - National Outdoor Leadership School (short-term study opportunity)

Hello Ross MBAs,

Members of the Ross Outdoor Club have been exploring a 10-12 day outdoor trip for academic credit in May 2014 with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). NOLS runs outdoor trips for academic credit with many other top MBA programs including HBS, Wharton and Kellogg: (http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2012-05-07/mbas-learning-leadership-the-hard-way) or (http://www.nols.edu/nolspro/)
These MBA trips provide students an opportunity to build leadership skills in a concrete way.

Additional instructions for the previous question. A little more info on NOLS: "We believe positive, ethical leaders change the world. Based on this belief, NOLS has, over the last 46 years, become the leader in wilderness education. Founded in 1965 by legendary mountaineer Paul Petzoldt, NOLS takes students of all ages on remote wilderness expeditions and teaches them technical outdoor skills, leadership, and environmental ethics.

What NOLS teaches cannot be learned in a traditional classroom or on a city street. It takes practice to learn outdoor skills and time to develop leadership. The backcountry provides the ideal setting for this unique, experiential educationÔÇöNOLS classrooms are some of the worldÔÇÖs wildest and most awe-inspiring locations. We believe living in untouched places like our classrooms will teach students responsibility for all that surrounds us."

What would prevent you from signing up for this course? *
Additional instructions for the previous question. Some logistical items:
1) Cost would be about $2000. This cost is comparable to currently offered short-term study abroad activities Ross offers (China, Israel, Europe). Similar to the short-term study abroad courses, flights are not included.
2) Academic credit would be 3 Ross MBA credits. This number of credits would be similar to currently offered short-term study abroad activities Ross offers (China, Israel, Europe)
3) Physical fitness. Nearly anyone can take part in a NOLS course. To get the most enjoyment out of a course, it is suggested that participants do 30-50 minutes of aerobic training 3 or more times per week.

Do you have a location preference? During May, the two ideal spots for a 10-12 day NOLS/Ross MBA trip are Utah and Alaska. *
