EVC Newsletter | September 12, 2016
Hello EVC members! The EVC board has been hard at work planning for another successful school year filled with entrepreneurial inspiration, events, and treks. We kicked off the year at the MBA Meet the Clubs events and met a lot of new faces who are passionate about entrepreneurship and venture capital. We are looking forward to a great year!
Stay in touch with EVC:
- Join EVC's team on Slack. Last year we piloted a tool called Honey to share resources. This year: Honey is out, Slack is in. Slack is a more intuitive communication tool used by thousands of companies, many of them start-ups. We are using it to exchange resources, post recruiting opportunities, share club updates, and discuss relevant entrepreneurial news. Please join so it's not just our board members talking to each other. We recommend downloading the app and turning on notifications to get the bext experience.
- Follow EVC on Twitter.
- Add the EVC Calendar to your Google calendar. Go to your calendar, click on the tiny arrow next to "Other Calendars" > "Add Calendar by URL" > paste this link: http://ross.campusgroups.com/ics?type=group&eid=df33ab9eca1c0a01cc922b03d19b8d13

September General Body Meeting
Tuesday 9/13 5-6PM
Ross - R1220
The first EVC meeting of the year is open to members + non-members, so bring a friend! We will give an overview of the exciting events being planned for members and some of the broader entrepreneurial resources available on campus. The second half of the meeting will be a panel discussion, hosted by three MBA2s who interned at startup and venture capital firms. The discussion will touch on feedback from their experiences, the recruiting process, and plans post-graduation. Our goal is for this to be a broader Q&A with the audience -- jump in if you have questions or relevant entrepreneurial experiences to share with the club. RSVP here.
Note: The 9/13 Meet the Board happy hour has been canceled because some guy named Malcolm Gladwell is giving a talk about entrepreneurship that night. We are planning to reschedule in October, stay tuned.
EVC's InnovateBrew: Coffee with Michigan Entrepreneurs
Friday 9/16 1-2PM
Shapiro Library - Innovation Space (1st floor)
A new series this year, EVC's InnovateBrew will seek to provide more opportunities for members to get together to discuss entrepreneurship, exchange ideas, and hear from alumni who are pursuing their entrepreneurial passions. This is a chance for you to meet other (aspiring) student entrepreneurs and talk about your goals, ideas, and ambitions in a pressure-free setting. Coffee will be provided by EVC and hosted in the Innovation Space – an open space in Shapiro Library designed for collaboration, ideation, and conversation. RSVP here.
EVC Buildathon: the code-free hackathon (in partnership with ProtoHack)
Friday 9/30 8:30AM-5:30PM
Munger - register on EventBrite
One piece of feedback from last year was members wanted more workshop opportunities. We're excited about this first one: a day-long workshop facilitated by ProtoHack. ProtoHack exists to show non-coders that they can create something amazing from nothing. They empower and enable the non-technical community with the tools, knowledge and connections that will help bring their idea to life and visually communicate it through prototyping. You’ll be using prototyping tools, drag and drop editors, mockups, wireframes and anything else you think of to visually demo your idea at the end of the day. You’ll learn how to use the best prototyping tools in the industry, network with like-minded people with various backgrounds, become a better product person, and get exclusive access to over $500 worth of tools and goodies for registering.
You do not necessarily need a team or an idea; the point of this workshop is to be an entry-level sampler menu for aspiring entrepreneurs who may not have their perfect idea yet. Space is limited, only 40 slots available. $40 per spot, $35 for EVC members (will share discount code in Tuesday's meeting and on Slack!). Confirmed so far: a judge from Detroit Venture Partners, a mentor from Ford who does UX product research, and a mentor from GM who focuses on mobility.
Save the date: EVC Detroit Startup Trek
Friday 10/14, ~8am-4pm.
