Role Trainings

As your team comes together, you have a lot of questions to answer in a short period of time. How are you coordinating, communicating, and operating with one another? Who's accountable for what? What is your creative approach and what can you do to encourage creative contributions throughout the process? How might you build the engagement, cohesion, and trust you need to collaborate effectively together? How are you possibly going to deliver on everything that’s expected of you in the next two days?!

To enable your team to begin answering these questions, each member will attend one of four role trainings, which will prepare you collectively to build a collaborative community, establish strategic structures, envision creative change, and deliver robust results. Each role, of course, is related to one quadrant of the Michigan Model of Leadership, and each is critically important if you are going to be successful in meeting this challenge. (Note: The color-coded bracelet you choose during your team formation period will indicate which role you hold and therefore which training you should attend.)

You will attend your training with 6-7 other people holding the same role within your team (as well as members from other teams). Together, you will be responsible for leading your team in ways that promote the behaviors and outcomes your quadrant of the Michigan Model champions.

Please arrive promptly at the following locations for your training at 11:00 AM:

Yellow: Collaborative Community
Blau 5th Floor Colloquium
Learn how to foster teamwork, collaboration, cohesion, and engagement among your teammates. Gain tools that will enable you to build high-quality relationships, engage productively, and thrive within your team.
Facilitator: Chris White, Managing Director, Michigan Ross Center for Positive Organizations

Red: Strategic Structures
R2210
Learn to lead your team by developing a plan for successful project management. Gain techniques for turning data into insights and organizing a path forward.
Facilitator: Ellen Carter, Erik Williams, & Aaron Steiner, Deloitte Consulting

Green: Creative Change
R0210

This training will be split into two halves. The first half will be led by Amazon. Learn how to work backwards and truly understand your customers and their needs. Prepare to produce two deliverables that are directly from Amazon’s operation: a flywheel and a PR/FAQ.
The second half will be led by the Zell Lurie Institute. Learn how to formulate, prepare, and practice for your three-minute pitch during the semi-final and final rounds of competition.
PR/FAQ Facilitators: Nickhil Bhave, Shambhavi Rao, & Lauren Schmidt, Amazon
Pitch Practice Facilitators: Jim Price & Anne Perigo, Zell Lurie Institute

GOAL
Expand your understanding of the challenge topic through interaction with subject matter experts. Use this time to listen, ask questions, and absorb insights. It’s not the time to brainstorm solutions or workshop ideas—that comes later.

STRUCTURE
The phase is organized into a number of concurrent sessions taking place from 2:00 to 4:30 PM on Monday. It’s up to you and your team to determine who attends what. At a minimum, we ask that two people from your team attend each session, although some sessions have space for more. (NOTE: Planning which teammates attend each session is part of your Team Charter.)

ONLINE RESEARCH
You are encouraged to research the topic on your own in addition to participating in the formal sessions. We’ve curated a Google Drive folder with links to articles, studies, and videos that will get you started—but you’re highly encouraged to use any research methods or resources available to you. Finding relevant resources beyond what has been provided will expand your understanding of the topic and will likely result in a competitive edge for your team.

VIDEO SCREENING
During the entire Discovery time, videos relevant to the challenge will be shown in the Robertson Auditorium.
