The Produce Station: Quality small grocer
1629 S. State St
Ann Arbor, MI 48104
I was lucky last year because I lived across the street from the Produce Station. I probably never would have stopped by otherwise, but it was one of the best decisions I made. At this full service grocer, you will not only find the staples you need for your shelves and refrigerators, but you will also get a full service kitchen to pick up a quick bite if you’re short on time. Quality is priority, and this leads to better tasting food.
The owner focuses on combining local producers with products from small growers/businesses from other parts of the country and world. In the warmer months, the produce spills into the parking lot because the small store isn’t large enough to hold the variety and quantity of fresh fruits, vegetables, and flowers available on a daily basis. Winter months still has a large stock of produce rotating based on where the owners can find the freshest products. The in-house wine expert is on hand to help find an affordable bottle to pair with a meal. The artisanal meat department sources vegetarian fed, antibiotic free poultry. The owners Rick and Craig have built relationships with the best suppliers over the past three decades and continue to expand the choices in their travels to various growers.
My favorite part about the Produce Station is the prepared meals. Executive Chef Brian Cromwell changes the menu based on what ingredients are available, so there is always something fresh and in season to try. Whether it’s a butternut squash burrito, rosemary chicken, or pasta primavera, the portions are large and taste great. If you’re looking for another great food store in town, don’t miss this one.
